The AMW motor was never a snowmobile engine. It's original designed use was in aircraft with a 'short' life expectancy. The concept was 'bought' by SCCA when the supply of Kawasaki engine became limited and it was legalized for National competition for the 1994 season and had many, many, many, problems when used in our application, some of which were bearing size and type, oiling of said bearings, heat treating of pistons and finicky carburetion. It was produced by a speciality engine manufacturer now known as 2SI in Beaufort, SC. Last information available stated that the company was no longer supporting the engine or manufacturing replacement parts for it. _________________

That said Dave Phaneuf (and a few others) have had success with the AMW in autocross. I'm surprised that he hasn't jumped in here. Probably too busy selling lawnmowers now that Michigan's long, dark winter of the soul has ended. |

I believe that the carbs were Mikuni BN38 carbs. _________________ Thanks ... Jay Novak

Yes, the AMW's did use Mikuni BN38 carbs. These were designed as watercraft carbs. While both carbs on the motor were essentially the same, they did have two separate part numbers because there was a "left" and a "right" carb. There was a linkage that connected the carbs together since only the right carb was connected to the throttle cable.
A powersports shop that deals with watercraft should be able to supply whatever you need.

And the ONLY reason told to me by 2SI that they did not use the good ol' VM38 round slide side draft carbs was that the KBS car that they were doing the conversion on had ONE crossbar in the way so they went with downdraft carbs just to avoid cutting the cross bar!!!!! ARRRRGH!!!! One of the many reasons the AMW was doomed from the start!!! Damn target drone motor!!!!

Eh, I kind of like the SBN-38 carbs. Quick and easy to tune, not too many parts. No float bowl. But then I cheat at tuning - oxygen sensor. Plus a few other tuning tricks. I hated them before.
I just made the hideous trek out to my garage (raining here) and found the rebuild kit part number:
MK-BN38/44 SPR
Works on our "SUPER BN38" carbs. One part number works on both sides, though one side has parts left over.
I have been paying about $35 apiece, I think. Two for the car? Easily installed, put ALL the pieces in, it's just a few minutes more.
In-stock in about 500 stores, watercraft mostly. I have seen them MUCH pricier as well, so shop around.
I hope that you're not married, so you can do this on the kitchen table, as the good lord intended.
And I do have <cough!> <cough!> quite a number of used AMW carbs, each of which would require a rebuild, for very low prices. . .
