Hi race fans,

After walking around the paddock, thought I'd pass on a few notes.

Almost all the drivers have reported that tire wear may be important to watch on Sunday race day, as the Heartland Park Topeka road course is quite abrasive on tires. That being said many are quite pleased with how quickly the spec Hoosier Racing Tire tires get up to ideal operating performance, with ideal lap likely being lap 3 or 4.

While several drivers took part in pre-event testing this past weekend, Tyler Hunter was one of only few in attendance since last week, in which he did over 220 miles of testing, working with his Front Range Motorsports crew.

The wind, which has been extremely gusty at times here, is causing problems for several drivers, affecting both the grip level in the turns and straight-line speeds.

Many of the front-runners in the second qualifying session, reported the track was slick during the session, leading to some understeer problems. They also mentioned the bump in middle of the high-speed first turn greatly upsets the balance of the car.

Given the third and final qualifying is late in the afternoon on Thursday, it is expected the pole winning time will come from that session.

Cheers,

EFCN Trackside: Formula Enterprises - Thursday Qualifying

The final qualifying session for the first-ever Formula Enterprises appearance at the Runoffs has just ended. Under sunny skies and in warm late afternoon conditions, it was not long before fast times began appearing on the timing monitors. Building on his Southeast championship-winning season, Mark Eaton moved to the top of the speed charts early on. Setting a new Runoffs lap record at the waving of the checkered flag, Eaton captured the pole position ahead of his teammate Matthew Inge, who also bettered his best lap. Nick Evans dropped to P3 for the Sunday afternoon race, having been unable to match his Wednesday time via the third best time in the session. Below are the results from the session. I'll be back shortly with some notes and the full results.

Evening all,

With the final qualifying session having just been completed, I had the chance to wander over to tech and talk to some of the drivers.

Brandon Aleckson, the FCM FE Championship Series Northern Pacific division champ, was greatly disappointed in his final session. The changes he and his crew made did not work, making the car very hard to drive via a severe understeer problem.

Nick Evans likewise reported he and his crew made the wrong changes to the car, resulting in an understeering car.

Justin Huffman having struggled with a lack of overall grip in the previous sessions, developed a severe oversteer when new tires were placed on the car. He ended up spinning and continuing in the session.

Steven Coates once again failed to post an indicative time as result of an engine problem. The Jay Motorsports crew believed they had solved the problem, however it appeared immediately when the session started.

Mark Eaton was very happy with how his car handled in the session. He believes the changes made to the car after looking at data and discussions with his teammate Matthew Inge, as well as changes to his driving style after looking on-board video resulted in the pole position and a new lap record.

Cheers,

Morning race fans,

Ahead of the first-ever Formula Enterprises Runoffs race, thought I'd pass on a few notes.

Brandon Aleckson and his crew spent last night putting in a new engine. Fortunately he was able to take part in the morning hardship/warm-up, as he suffered a throttle cable failure. The car will be ready for the first race after the lunch break.

Steven Coates has reportedly solved his fuel issue problem that prevented him turning a quick time in qualifying.

A number drivers and crew members were seen going to tech on Saturday getting fuel samples checked. The reason being that the technical inspectors had problems with their testing apparatus earlier in the week.

Finally it should be noted that the high winds have returned. Currently it is very windy, with it gusting up the front straight and down the back straight.

Cheers,

EFCN Trackside: Formula Enterprises - Sunday Race

The first-ever Formula Enterprises National Championship Runoffs has just concluded at Heartland Park Topeka in Kansas. As expected the field immediately fanned out three and four wide upon the green flag waving. Getting the best run into the high-speed first turn, Nick Evans advanced from third on the grid into the lead, just ahead of the front-row duo of Mark Eaton and Matthew Inge. Attacking the Kansas road course on cold tires, the lead trio soon had a multi-car advantage over Brandon Aleckson, who in turn was pulling away from Matt Schneider and Paul Schneider. Out front the battle for the lead was proving highly entertaining. Evans led for a few laps, before Eaton took turn leading the three-car pack. Inge made his presence felt a couple laps later, working his way into the lead. Over the course of the next several laps, the trio routinely went side-side around the 2.5-mile track. While lapped traffic allowed Aleckson to reduce the gap to the leaders in the second half of the 18-lap race he never got within striking distance. With three-way fight headed towards a last lap deciding affair, things changed just two laps from the checkered flag, when Inge slide off-course in the esses. As a result, Eaton managed to hold off Evans at the stripe, earning the first-ever Formula Enterprises gold medal at the Runoffs ahead of Evans. Aleckson, having run unchallenged virtually all race completed the top-three, while Matt Schneider and Paul Schneider finished fourth and fifth following a race-long battle for position. In winning the race, Eaton also captured the Chicago Region Triple Crown.

Hi gang,

Just returned to the paddock and managed to talk to a few drivers before they packed up and headed out.

Many of the drivers reported the track was quite greasy this afternoon, causing numerous drivers to spin off-course in the 18-lap race.

Both Paul Schneider and Brandon Aleckson reported they just missed their setups, forcing them to battle understerring cars.

Jon Bennett retired early with a mechanical failure.

Race winner Mark Eaton only attended the Runoffs thanks to support from several of the Robinson Motor Sports staff.

Cheers,
