Good day EFCN readers,

This will be the official discussion thread for the 2007 SCCA National Championship Runoffs. Please keep all discussion to this thread. The EFCN team will be arriving in Topeka on Tuesday evening and we'll be live from the track on Wednesday morning, taking you all the way through to all six main events on the weekend.

Our coverage will feature daily reports and results postings, photo galleries, paddock notes/info posted to this thread, audio interviews, and the nightly EFCN Trackside Live podcasts.

Please feel free to use this thread to ask questions, as I will be roaming the paddock all week as I leave Al Craighead chained to his computer in the media room. It promises to be a great week of road racing and we hope that you join us for unparalleled coverage of this year's event. No other class will receive this level of media, so enjoy it.

Hi all,

The FCM staff is now here on-site at Heartland Park, where the Formula Vee drivers have just completed the third of four qualifying sessions. While an early stoppage prevented limited the number of laps they could do during the session, the sunny but cool conditions allowed for some very fast times. Bob Neumeister became the provisional polesitter at the conclusion of qualifying with a new lap record 1:47.818. Below are the top-10 from the session. Notes from the paddock will be posted shortly.

Qualifying 3

Neumeister 1:47.818
Varacins 1:48.010
Stout 1:48.422
Dreizler 1:48.471
Shields 1:48.507
Oseth 1:48.863
Davis 1:49.028
Siebenaler 1:49.244
Noble 1:49.280
Womer 1:49.317

Cheers,

Hey Al,

The FV is an open tire class, correct? I think I remember last year the tire choose was a big factor on who was fast.

PADDOCK PASS UPDATE - Wednesday #1:

I just got back from the FV paddock and had the opportunity to chat with a number of drivers. I'll be back out there after lunch to gather a little more info.

Northeast hotshoe Ed Womer did not go out in the wet Monday session and got bogged down with slower traffic on Tuesday, timing in 14th after the second session. He was able to turn it up a little today and was 10th, but he is battling some motor issues and had Dave Carr (Autowerks) at the pit after today's session. They were going to start by looking at the timing.

Former National Champion Jeff Loughead was involved in an incident, checking up to avoid a spinning Brad Stout. Loughead was contacted by Jim Kearney, ending both of their runs. Loughead spun his steering box and they were working on re-setting the front geometry when I stopped by.

Lisa Noble is once again enjoying the competition at here home track and is currently running within the top-10. They had the motor out of the car right after the session and were set to try out a different gearbox.

Speaking of boxes, it look like a vast majority of the competitors are running the 1:26 third gear short box. We'll lay out a 'FV By the Numbers' post in a while, highlighting chassis, engine builders and tires.

I'll get more soon....

If you have any questions, ask away!

Hi race fans,

There has been some discussion regarding the FV tire compounds and size. In an effort to clarify what is available and the pro and cons, FCM spoke with former Formula Vee SCCA National driver and current race engineer Jeremy Grenier.

Afternoon race fans,

Well its time to go racing for the Formula Vee drivers. While cool and overcast, no rain is predicted for the race just after lunch. Below are the FormulaCar Magazine picks for the 18-lap race.

Craighead's Top-Three and Hard Charger

1st - Bob Neumeister
2nd - Brad Stout
3rd - Steve Oseth
HC - Eddie Cadena

After losing the 2006 title for technical violation, Neumeister has been on a mission all week. While it will be a tight multi-car fight all the way to the checkered flag, he will emerge with the victory just ahead of former multiple champions Stout and Oseth. I fully expect Cadena to steadily move up through the field as the race progresses.

Howden's Top-Three and Hard Charger

1st - Michael Varacins
2nd - Bob Neumeister
3rd - Steve Oseth
HC - Mike Beaumia

After running to a podium last year, I believe that this will be Varacin's day to shine. They have found some serious speed and the fast nature of this track will allow their slippery Speed Sport AM-5 to gain a small advantage. Neumeister will run a solid second, chased home by Oseth and Stout, with Oseth winning the final spot on the rostrum. The Hard Charge will be Mike Beaumia, who can be much faster than his 35th place starting position.

Cheers,
