Jason Knutson driving and Leon Mitchell (Mitchell Racing Services) tuning on the car just set a blistering time of 1.31.471 for Saturdays race at the Road Atlanta double national.
This time puts him on the pole for F500 and is forth fastest overall in the run group ahead of all the FF.
This should give a good time to gauge how well the "restricted" MC powered cars have been slowed by the proposed IIR when they run in May at the Rational. |

| yep considering he is .2 under the track record! First time there, and I would be willing to bet he hasnt found the correct gear and clutch set-up yet either. I will estimate his time to be a 1:29.???? to a 1:30.000 WHEN he finds the correct setting. I would offer my two cents to him, but when it comes to the clutching hes far more advanced than 99% of the people in this class including me. I know hes capable of turning atleast a 1:29.800, I have done that on a test day at 8am in the morning. I hope he gets down to a 1:28.000 . If he dosent, I will be disapointed. |

Great job Jason. I think you are right about the times. I suspect that the track is a bit slow this weekend. The FF cars are about 3 seconds off of the FF record which is held by John Robinson at a 1:30.1. John Robinson has also qualified at a 1:29.8. Clint has had official times in the 1:31s many times. I think Clint expected you to break the FF record.
I think your 1:31.4 is a great time for the weekend. Keep up the good work.
PS: if you ever want to drive my 600 just say the word. _________________ Thanks ... Jay Novak

The track on Saturday was unusually hot at about 85 degrees so the slower lap times reflected this.
BUT, on Sunday it was cool and the air density was about as high as you can get it - perfect for a 2 stroke. This resulted in Jason breaking Clint's track record by about .9 second. Jason did a masterful job of driving.
However, the race was marred by a bad accident at Turn One on the first lap as four FF's were taken out with one of them upside down with a small fire. Fortunately, the corner workers were right on top of the incident and no one was hurt, the race was black flagged to get the area cleared and the race re-started with no further incidents.
The rest of the race groups had their share of major incidents with full course yellow/pace car being called almost for every group on both race days. The worst was on Saturday, when a Spec Miata hit the concrete wall at the pit entrance under the Turn 11 bridge on the driver's side of the car and knocking unconscious the driver - he was carried out by a helicopter - reports are that he is okay and returning home to Massachusetts. This caused a very rare red flag call which was eerie to see all the cars just sitting quietly on the track.
Someone coined this race weekend the "Full Moon Double National".
