Racing Asia: GP2 Test for Series Winner

Series officials have announced that the winner of the JK Racing Asia Series 2011 season will receive a GP2 test in the Caterham Team AirAsia GP2 car. The test will take place during the official GP2 pre-season tests in 2012, at a date and venue to be announced later.

“I am very happy to be able to announce this award which comes about through our collaboration with AirAsia,” said David Sonenscher, CEO of Motorsport Asia. “This will be a great opportunity for one of the young aspiring future Formula One stars, currently racing in our JK Racing Asia Series.

“The whole purpose of the JK Racing Asia Series is to provide a platform to develop young talent out of karting and towards their goal of Formula One. A test with one of the leading GP2 Teams, which is just one step from Formula One, will not only provide further motivation for them to secure the JK Racing Asia title, but will also give them an opportunity to understand what will be expected from them in their future careers.

“I am very grateful to Tony Fernandes for putting this together as an added bonus to AirAsia’s involvement in the JK Racing Asia Series.”

“At AirAsia we believe in making dreams a reality, and our extensive involvement in motorsports, from our Driver’s Development Program with Team Lotus and Team Lotus itself, amongst others, allows us to continually be a part of the growth of our youth as they pursue their future,” said Tony Fernandes, Group CEO of AirAsia. “To be able to offer this unique and exciting prize to the champion of the Series is an absolute pleasure, and we look forward to catching some of the upcoming races in Singapore and India.”

“We are delighted to be supporting the young talent that is emerging from the JK Racing Asia Series by giving this test with our GP2 team Caterham Team AirAsia,” added Riad Asmat, CEO of Team Lotus. “In founding the team, we wanted to create opportunities for young talent from Asia and around the world to take the next steps up the motorsport ladder, and this partnership with the JK Racing Asia Series does exactly that. I am sure that whoever wins the drive will do themselves proud and we will help as much as we can to give them the opportunity of a lifetime.

The JK Racing Asia Series title chase resumes this weekend (September 24-25), with races as part of the Formula One Singapore Grand Prix.
