Marco Wittmann (Signature) was victorious in the third Formula 3 Euro Series race at the 5.901-kilometres Silverstone circuit on Sunday (September 11). In spite of a drive through penalty for jumping the start, points’ leader Roberto Merhi (Prema Powerteam) still came to the chequered flag in second place. Carlos Muñoz (Signature) ended up third in the race that had many entertaining position fights. With six races remaining, Merhi’s advantage in the drivers’ standings is 76 points, Wittmann has moved up into second place again.

The young drivers from the ranks of the Formula 3 Euro Series provided great entertainment for the spectators at Silverstone on Sunday, with numerous overtaking manoeuvres. Daniel Juncadella (Prema Powerteam) and Felix Rosenqvist (Mücke Motorsport) collided on the opening lap in the battle for second place behind Merhi, who was leading at that time. Wittmann, Marco Sørensen (Mücke Motorsport) and Kimiya Sato (Motopark) benefited from this accident. When Merhi was called into the pit lane for a drive through penalty for jumping the start, Wittmann was the new race leader. Merhi dropped back to eighth, but during the race, he worked his way back up to finish second. In the closing stages, Sato collided with Sørensen in the battle for third place. Both drivers retired and Muñoz eventually crossed the finish line in third position. Canadian Gianmarco Raimondo (Prema Powerteam) was not classified, after retiring on lap six.

"Having had many problems, particularly in qualifying, we have made the best out of this race," commented Wittmann. "Of course, I benefited from Roberto’s drive through penalty. Initially, I was able to extend my lead to 18 seconds. Towards the end, I tried to save my tyres. I hadn’t expected this victory."

"I am not quite sure whether my start was a jump start or not," stated Merhi. "I didn’t expect to drop back that far after my penalty. Later on, I didn’t have a chance against Marco anymore, he has done a good job. After the penalty, second place was the best I could do."

"It was a great race which was really fun," added Munoz. "I was involved in many position fights, among others with my teammate Laurens Vanthoor, with whom I was battling for third place. Finishing third is a great result, I am happy."

The Formula 3 Euro Series continues on October 1-2, with Rounds 22, 23, and 24 in Valencia, Spain.

The top-three, along with how the North American racers did, will be posted following every session on the EFCN Facebook page, EFCN Twitter page, and EFCN Insider Twitter page.
