Spaniard Jose Luis Abadin has become the 23rd driver to join the 2011 FIA Formula Two Championship, and will make his race debut at the opening round at Silverstone this weekend (April 16-17).

The 24 year-old began his motorsport career in karting at the age of 13, before graduating to single-seaters in 2006, when he entered the Master Formula Junior series. Abadin then moved up to Spanish F3 in 2008 with Novo Team Eca.

The Spaniard stayed in the category, renamed the European F3 Open Series, for the following two seasons with the Drivex team, finishing seventh overall last year. He also claimed third in the series’ 2009 Copa de España class, taking three wins in the process.

“I’m looking forward to F2 because following on from F3 it is the best option to fight on equal terms, and there is a high level of competition,” stated Abadin. “I have much less experience than the other drivers at Silverstone with this car but I will go step by step, learning everything, thanks to the extensive information that F2 gives me.”

“Jose is an intelligent guy who’s eager to learn and progress in F2 as quickly as possible after three seasons in F3”, Formula Two Series Director Jonathan Palmer said. “Our onboard video and data sharing feature has yielded huge gains in performance for many drivers in F2, and this will be invaluable for Jose, who I fully expect to be challenging for points as the season progresses.”

The 2011 FIA Formula Two Championship will commence at the Silverstone Circuit on the Arena F1 circuit on April 16-17.
