Canadian Gianmarco Raimondo will continue his pursuit of a Formula One career in 2011, joining the Formula 3 Euro Series with German-based Team Motopark Academy.

Raimondo will use VW power in a Dallara chassis this season, as he makes the move to F3 Euro Series, following an excellent rookie European season in F3 Italia. 'Gmo', as he is known, ended his first European junior formula car campaign third in the competitive F3 Italia rookie standings. With only two DNF’s in 16 rounds of racing action, Raimondo showed great patience and fantastic race craft throughout his first season of F3 competition. This next step in his racing career will see Raimondo race against the top F3 pilots throughout the Europe.

"I first encountered Motopark in Barcelona, Spain, at my last test of the season in Italian F3," stated Raimondo. "Timo Rumfkeil, Team Manager for Motopark approached me in pitlane and asked me how I would feel to drive in the F3 Euro Series with his team. Since we were testing together with Euro Series cars he noticed my driving while spotting his drivers on track. He didn't know my name at first and only recognized me by my car and helmet."

Raimondo and Rumfkeil spoke soon after via email regarding a package and budget for the upcoming year. In doing so, the duo decided to meet in person to finalize their 2011 plans. The pair met up while Rumfkeil was in Miami, Fla., to discuss the program and struck a great friendship. After the meeting, Raimondo did his homework to see what team would suit him best, even though he received such a good feeling from Rumfkeil.

"I wanted to join with a team that was supported by VW, so my only other real option was Signature," continued the talented Canadian racer. "I did the obvious thing by picking the team that wanted me and wanted to push 100% for me. In such a competitive series it is absolutely crucial to have a team that gives you the best treatment with the best equipment.”

In 2011, the Formula 3 Euro Series enters its eighth season of competition. The championship is a nine event, 18-race campaign, that will visit six different countries across Europe.

Official pre-season testing for Raimondo and the Team Motopark Academy starts on March 10-11, at the Circuit de Catalunya outside of Barcelona and continues in Valencia, Spain, on March 14-15, prior to the 2011 season commencing on April 2-3, at the Circuit Paul Ricard in France. Raimondo is keen to get the 2011 campaign underway as he looks to make his mark early on.

“Unfortunately I haven't gotten the chance to test with the team, however the tire compound is changing for this season and this produces an entirely different feel for the car,” ssaid Gmo. “Everyone will basically start from scratch with this new soft compound. That’s very good for me being new to this series.”

Final plans for 2011 are already underway, with new partners and sponsors that will be announced in the coming weeks.
