American Connor De Phillippi is the 2009 Walter Hayes Trophy winner, having taking the victory on Sunday afternoon (November 1) on the Silverstone National Circuit. Joining the Team USA Scholarship driver on the podium were Robert Barrable and Felix Fisher. It marks the second consecutive year a Team USA driver has won the prestigious Formula Ford race in England.

The chase for the prestigious Walter Hayes Trophy continued on Sunday morning with those drivers who encountered problems in their Heats seeking to advance into the Semi-Finals and potential birth in the after Grand Final feature. Following the traditional Storm race, six places in the Last Chance race were up for grabs via the Progression race. Marcus Allen (Swift SC92F), having been not been classified in Heat Three, proved the man to beat, leading Tom Bradshaw (Swift SC92F0 and Julian Westwood (Swift SC93) to the checkered flag. Ensuring their pursuit of the WHT would continue, Nelson Rowe (Van Diemen RF99), Cormac O’Neill (Ray GRS08) and Ed Moore (Van Diemen RF99) finished fourth, fifth and sixth in the eight-lap race.

After a short break, 35 Formula Fords were back on-course for the eight-lap Last Chance race, seeking a place in one of the two afternoon Semi-Finals. Former Team USA Scholarship driver Josef Newgarden (Van Diemen RF92), having started P1 and led his Saturday Heat Two race early before an incident, overcame the damp condition to score a comfortable win. Bradshaw, having worked his way from the rear of the field in the eight-lap affair, crossed the stripe in second ahead of fellow Progression race advancees Westwood and Rowe. In finishing fifth and sixth, Jonathan McMullan (Van Diemen RF92) and Moore kept their Walter Hayes Trophy dreams alive, advancing into the Semi-Finals.

As expected, the opening Semi-Final featured plenty of side-by-side action, particularly at the front of the field, were multiple drivers were not only battling for the win, but a front-row starting position in the late afternoon Walter Hayes Trophy Grand Final. Barrable (Van Diemen RF04) continued his recent of run of form on a damp but drying track, having won his Heat Two race on Saturday, by scoring a second win of the weekend by a slim margin of 0.101s over fellow FF1600 standout Neville Smyth (Ray GRS07). Team USA Scholarship driver Brett Smrz (Ray GRS08) ensured he would be in contention for the Grand Final win, with a third place finish, only a few car lengths back of the lead duo when the checkered flag waved. Jordan Skinner (Ray GRS08) crossed the stripe in fourth, while Newgarden continued his charge back into a front-running starting position in the Grand Final with a fifth place result. Fellow American Doug Prendeville struggled in the 12-lap race, eventually crossing the stripe in 18th place, earning the final place in the Grand Final.

With the results setting the final grid order for the Grand Final, the second Semi-Final proved to be just as entertaining, though a more one-sided affair. Team USA Scholarship driver De Phillippi (Ray GRS08) proved to be unbeatable in the 12-lap race, taking a commanding 7.791s victory over Fisher (Swift SC92F). Heat One race winner David Grady (Van Diemen RF02) completed the top-three, leading Matthew Parr (Van Diemen RF01) and Josh Fisher (Reynard 89FF) to the checkered flag. Heat race winners Rory Butcher (Van Diemen RF92) and Stuart Gough (Ray GRS07) chances at the a Walter Hayes Trophy win vanished, as the duo were both not classified after failing to make it to the finish.

The 2009 Gran Final started with the 36-car field lining up on a damp Silverstone National circuit on Sunday afternoon, with De Phillippi and Barrable on the front-row care of their Semi-Final victories. When the 15-lap race got underway, the duo immediately commenced, what would be a race long dual for the win. The duo did not run alone however, as Felix Fisher, Smyth and Grady quickly stated their intentions to challenge for the victory. With Team USA’s Smrz and fellow American Newgarden not far behind, the battle for the win raged lap-after lap. Only decided by the waving of the checkered flag, De Phillippi scored the historic win by 1.035s over Barrable. In doing so, the talented young Californian became the second consecutive American and Team USA driver to win the highly prestigious Walter Hayes Trophy. Fisher joined the duo on the podium with a third place finish ahead of Smyth and Grady. Newgarden crossed the stripe in sixth, three places ahead of Team USA’s Smrz. Prendeville finished 30th in his second running of the famed race.
