Brendon Hartley (Carlin Motorsport) scored his maiden victory in the Formula 3 Euro Series on Sunday (September 6), Carlin Motorsport its inaugural series victory at its home track of Brands Hatch in England. Fellow British drivers Alexander Sims (Mücke Motorsport) and Sam Bird (Mücke Motorsport) completed the podium after the 14th season round in the Formula 3 Euro Series. Jules Bianchi (ART Grand Prix) retired in the pits after six laps, but still retains his championship lead with a margin of 16 points.

The race was determined by two safety car phases. Basil Shaaban (Prema Powerteam) caused the first by hitting the barrier, and a collision between British-American driver Jake Rosenzweig (Carlin Motorsport), César Ramos (Manor Motorsport) and Adrien Tambay (ART Grand Prix) triggered the second safety car phase of the race.

Sims benefited from the first restart to overtake Esteban Gutierrez and Bird only a little bit later. He couldn’t challenge race leader Hartley however, who scored his first F3 win.

“Having scored my maiden race win in the Formula 3 Euro Series is just great," stated Hartley. "I am also happy for my Carlin team. They have been working very hard over the last two years in the Formula 3 Euro Series. I didn’t make any mistakes during the race, which is why I have won.”

“I drove a pretty good race," commented Sims. "I started fifth and I thought that third place would be realistic. That I even ended up second is even nicer. This weekend, I have scored some points, which was my goal.”

“I didn’t have an easy race," added Bird. "First of all, my clutch went, and secondly, I had the problem that my steering wheel was stuck for a brief while right after the first restart. As a result, Alex Sims could overtake me. I think that I drove one of my best races ever, but I am disappointed that I only ended up third. I had the speed for a better result.”

The 2009 Formula 3 Euro Series returns to action on September 19-20, with Rounds 15 and 16 at Circuit de Catalunya in Spain.
