EFCN has spies and inside sources all over the junior formula open wheel ladder and we’ll be using this page to keep our readership, you information hungry formula car enthusiasts, up to speed on the happenings in the paddock and in the race shops around North America and the world. Remember, this information is just rumor until is it confirmed as fact. – Ed.

Topic: Industry News: Volkswagen to Create Junior Formula Car Series in North America

INSIDER: Sources within the junior formula car racing community have informed The EFCN Insider that Volkswagen is in the process of creating a new race series in North America. It is believed the new series will feature the new announced Dallara Formulino chassis - an entry-level model car that can easily be updated to fit various aero packages - powered by a Volkswagen powerplant. While no details have been released, it is believed the new series is being targeted to drivers and teams that previously raced in the now defunct Formula BMW Americas series.




Topic: British FF: Dempsey Set to Challenge for 2010 Walter Hayes Win

INSIDER: The Insider has learned that current Star Mazda driver coach and former multiple series race winner Peter Dempsey will be returning to his Formula Ford racing roots this fall via the prestigious Walter Hayes Trophy. The Irish racing standout will return to the cockpit of the Ray GRS05 that he piloted to victory lane in both the 2008 and 2007 races, seeking to becoming only the second driver to win more than twice. Team USA scholarship drivers, who drive for Dempsey's father's Cliff Dempsey Racing squad, having won the past two Walter Hayes Trophy races.




Topic: USF2000: Series to Open Championship Class to Other Chassis

INSIDER: News has circulated that as means of helping contain costs, the USF2000 National Championship officials have discussed allowing chassis other than the mandated Van Diemen chassis to take part in the Championship class next season. The EFCN Insider however has it on good authority this will not happen, as the series has a multi-year contract with Elan (manufacturer of Van Diemen race cars) and has other cost reduction plans on tap for 2011.

INSIDER: The EFCN Insider has learned that Star Mazda Championship title contender Caio Lara will likely not take part in Round 11 at Road America. The Brazilian was robbed in Trois-Rivieres and among the items taken was his passport and visa. As a result, he remains in Canada getting new documents. Unfortunately it is expected to take upwards of a week to get the replacements, preventing him from traveling to Wisconsin. While it is unconfirmed, it is expected JDC MotorSports will get a replacement driver for the Lara, who recently scored his first series win, at Road America.




Topic: Skip Barber: F2000 Standout Greist Returns to Series at Road America

INSIDER: Skip Barber National officials have confirmed that Revere Greist will join the series during the upcoming doubleheader at Road America. The former Skip Barber Regional champion will contest Rounds 11 and 12 in Wisconsin, having focused his racing endeavors in SCCA National Formula Continental competition the past two years. The track standout recently started from the pole position in the prestigious June Sprints at Road America, and previously finished on the podium in the SCCA National Championship Runoffs at the 4.0-mile road course.




Topic: Indy Lights: Jorda to be Parked Due to Finances

UPDATE (8-06-10): While it initially appeared Carmen Jorda was set to return to the cockpit of an Andersen Racing entry for the rest of 2010, after getting some more funding prior to the Toronto Indy event, the Spanish driver has once again been parked at Mid-Ohio. It now appears that the remainder of her rookie season is in jeopardy due to continued financial woes.
INSIDER: The EFCN Insider has been informed that Indy Lights rookie Carmen Jorda will not take part in Round Four at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway due to a lack of finances. While yet to be confirmed, it is believed that Spanish driver is behind payment to the Andersen Racing squad as a result of some problems with sponsors. It is unsure if and when Jorda will return to the cockpit of an Indy Lights car.




Topic: Indy Lights: Alliance Motorsports Set to Return

UPDATE (8-06-10): In a surprise move, oval racer and former stock car rising star Shane Hmiel will drive for Alliance Motorsports. The American, who is banned for life from NASCAR competition for drug infractions, will make his formula car debut, having raced in USAC the past two years.
INSIDER: Word has spread within the Indy Lights paddock that Alliance Motorsports is close to announcing a new sponsor partnership which will see the Indianapolis-based team returning to the series for the final few rounds of 2010. Alliance Motorsports has run selected races over the past two years with American Mike Potekhen getting behind the wheel when he has funding.




Topic: F1000: New East Coast Pro Championship in the Works

INSIDER: The Insider has learned that plans are in the works to create a new east coast-based pro Formula 1000 series, commencing in 2011. While currently only in the discussion phase, members of the Formula Race Car Club of America and the F2000 Championship Series have spoken to one another, as well as with selected F1000 manufacturers to determine if a new series is viable and how many cars/drivers could be attracted.




Topic: Star Mazda: Champion to Get Sports Car Ride

INSIDER: Sources close to Mazda Motorsports have informed the EFCN Insider that the 2010 Star Mazda Champion will be awarded a funded sports car ride for the 2011 season. This will mark the second consecutive year the series champion will make the transition to closed-wheel cars as part of the MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development Ladder program. The 2009 champion Adam Chistodoulou was awarded a ride in a Mazda RX8 in the Grand-Am series. It is believed the funded ride in 2011 will again be with a Mazda team in Grand-Am.

INSIDER: While yet to be official confirmed, the EFCN Insider has been informed that Skip Barber National title contender Ashley Freiberg will take part in the upcoming Star Mazda Championship doubleheader at the Autobahn Country Club. The Illinois teenager, who scored her first National win recent, made her series debut at the technical road course last year. It has yet yet to be announced who Freiberg will drive for, but she has raced and tested with Team GDT previously.




Topic: Indy Lights: Michael Crawford Motorsports Returns to Series Competition

INSIDER: Sources close to the team have told the EFCN Insider that Michael Crawford Motorsports will be making its series return shortly. It is believed that Mexican racer Juan Pablo Garcia will get behind the wheel of a Michael Crawford Motorsports entry at both Mid-Ohio and Infineon. Michael Crawford Motorsports most recently had been leasing its car and equipment to HVM Racing.

INSIDER: After speaking with current Star Mazda Championship leader Conor Daly at the recent Toronto Indy event, the EFCN Insider has learned that the talented young American is still planning on making the move to European junior formula car competition next season. It remains to be seen how the MAZDASPEED Motorsports Driver Development prize will play into these plans, should Daly capture the Star Mazda title. Currently Mazda has not announced what the Star Mazda champion will receive as a prize, given the demise of the Atlantic Championship. Last year's champion was given a funded ride in the Grand-Am Rolex Series GT class.

INSIDER: Sources with the F2000 Championship Series have informed The EFCN Insider that British racer James Winslow is in talks with one or more teams about taking part in the doubleheader event at Watkins Glen International. Winslow, who has just confirmed he is returning to a Sam Schmidt Motorsports Indy Lights car at the same event in upstate New York, is reportedly interested in joining the series in order to get added seat time. If he does join an F2000 team, it remains to be seen if he'll run in the F2000 Championship races, or just take part in testing and practice.

INSIDER: The EFCN Insider has learned that USF2000 National Championship racer Josh Fielding has encountered funding issues. The English racer, who had originally planned to run the full season, elected to not run the recent series race at the Iowa Speedway in order to focus on securing additional funds. It remains to be seen if Fielding will return to the cockpit of a Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing entry this season.

INSIDER: Sources within both the USF2000 National Championship and Star Mazda Championship have stated that Terrick Mansur is poised to run selected Star Mazda races during the second half of the 2010 season. The Aruba native has reportedly decided to halt his 2010 USF2000 race efforts, after a difficult few races have effectively ruled him out of challenging for the series title. Mansur as a result is looking at using the remainder of his 2010 budget to run selected Star Mazda races, with the goal of racing in the series full-time in 2011.

INSIDER: The EFCN Insider has been informed that Fabio Urbano and BGR Team Grote have parted ways in the Ontario Formula Ford Championship. The American racer has struggled to improve on his rookie campaign in the competitive series this season, and when combined with funding issues and a significant crash during testing for Rounds Five and Six at Mosport International Raceway, both parties have elected to end the partnership. It is unsure if Urbano will rejoin the series later in the season with another squad, or just regroup for the 2011 race season.

INSIDER: People close to the driver and team have informed the EFCN Insider that Anders Krohn is poised to make his Indy Lights debut. The Star Mazda Championship race winner and former F2000 Championship Series champion has reportedly secured funding that will allow the Norwegian to drive Andersen Racing's Indy Lights car at Watkins Glen International. While it is believed this will be one-off outing with the focus remaining the Star Mazda title, it is unsure if Krohn will perform double duty at Watkins Glen, as the Star Mazda Champion is in attendance during the event at the Glen.

INSIDER: Sources within the USF2000 National Championship have stated that Liberty Motorsports will add Brian Belardi to its driver line-up for the remainder of the season. The team principal, who has run selected F2000 Championship Series races and been a leading Formula Continental racer in SCCA Club Racing competition, will make his series debut in Round Four at the Iowa Speedway in the National class. Piloting a Zetec powered Van Diemen, Belardi's goal is to win the class and earn the class prize of an 2.0-liter Mazda MZR engine utilized by the Championship class cars.

INSIDER: The EFCN Insider has learned that Canadian Keenan Harris is reportedly in talks with multiple teams in the Ontario Formula Ford Championship ahead of the next event at Calabogie Motorsports Park in July. The former Ontario Formula Vee standout and current OFFC Rookie of the Year contender is seeking to return to the cockpit ASAP, after missing the CanAm Cup event doubleheader this past weekend. It is unclear if Harris is leaving Britain West Motorsports or just weighing all his options for the remainder of the 2010 campaign.

As a result, championship front-runner Terrick Mansur's entry in Round Four of the championship at the Iowa Speedway will feature the 2.0-liter Mazda MZR engine, which will mandatory for all series cars in 2011.

INSIDER: BGR Team Grote members have informed The Insider that Mikhail Goikhberg will return to the Ontario Formula Ford Challenge for Rounds Five and Six at Mosport International Raceway. As part of the annual CanAm Cup trophy event, which is now run in comjunction with the Father's Day NASCAR event at the high-speed road course outside of Toronto, the Russian will once again pilot a Brian Graham Racing prepared Van Diemen FF1600. Goikhberg, who contested the entire 2009 OFFC season with BGR Team Grote, rejoins the Barrie, Ont.-based squad as a race winner in the 2010 USF2000 National Championship.

The K-Hill/Greisiger Motorsports squad reportedly has scheduling conflict with the Canadian doubleheader, as a result the former series champion from Florida is slated to join Liberty Motorsports for the Mosport doubleheader. Morgan is expected to rejoin his regular team after the two races for the remainder of the season.

It is believed Tovo and ArmsUp Motorsports will contest the remainder of the 2010 schedule, with the goal of winning the National class title.

INSIDER: Sources in the USF2000 National Championship have informed the EFCN Insider that a new two-car team will enter the series full-time in Round Three at O'Reilly Raceway Park. Under the guidance of former Formula One and IndyCar Series driver Eliseo Salazar, Fuerza Chile Motorsports is slated to makes it debut at the Night Before the 500 event. Driving for the team will be Martin Scuncion, who raced in the season-opener with another squad and fellow Chilean Javier Barrales, who who the Chilean F3 title last season.

INSIDER: The EFCN Insider has learned that Jeff Simmons will drive the Team E entry in the upcoming Freedom 100 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The move comes after Jan Heylen was prevented from racing in the event due to the fact he didn't take part in the Rookie Orientation oval test at the Kentucky Speedway and the pre-event test at Indy can not count as an oval orientation run. Simmons joins Team E after last racing in the series 2008, where he earned two podium finishes and one pole position. The American has twice been the series title runner-up (2003 and 2005).




Topic: USF2000: Top Oval Engineer Set to Join Liberty Motorsports

INSIDER: According to people close to the team, Liberty Motorsports will enhance its USF2000 National Championship program, by adding renowned oval race engineer Larry Nash for the upcoming oval races at O'Reilly Raceway Park and Iowa Speedway. Nash, who helped guide Anders Krohn to a Star Mazda oval win last year, is expected to work with Liberty Motorsports driver Terrick Mansur during Rounds Three and Four.

INSIDER: The EFCN Insider has learned that Junior Strous will no longer be racing in the Indy Lights series with HVM Racing. Sources within the Indy Light series have stated that Strous' funding has not materialized, with the Dutch driver now owing money to number of parties. It is believed this situation may result in legal action against Strous and his backers.




Topic: Ontario FF: Pigot Set to Join Series with Brian Graham Racing

INSIDER: Sources within the Ontario Formula Ford Championship have stated that Spencer Pigot will be on the grid when the cars take to the track for the season-opener on May 7-8 at Mosport International Raceway. The Floridian, who currently leads the Skip Barber National title chase, is slated to drive for reigning four-time Rookie of the Year winner Brian Graham Racing. While it is believed the deal is currently only for Rounds One and Two, the Insider has learned Pigot is seeking funding to run as many OFFC events as possible in 2010.

INSIDER: The EFCN Insider has learned that Cape Motorsports with With Wayne Taylor Racing has one or two additional drivers lined up for the 2010 USF2000 National Championship, but is currently unable to run them due to a lack of cars. The problem arises that the new drivers want to run the Mazda engine package. It is believe the Cape brothers are talking with other teams/car owners about potentially running a Zetec powered car in the upcoming non-points race at Laguna Seca, as well as Round Three at O'Reilly Raceway Park, before switching to a Mazda powerplant for the remainder of the season.

INSIDER: The EFCN Insider has been informed by sources in Europe that the International Formula Masters series will likely not run in 2010 and may be shut down for good. Reportedly a lack of funded drivers, combined with multiple series teams shifting focus to other championship has resulted in the cancellation of the upcoming season. While yet to be confirmed, the series has not responded to inquiries and no schedule or news has been given out regarding 2010.




Topic: F2000 Championship: Primus Racing Looking at Racing in Canada

INSIDER: Returning pro F2000 standouts Primus Racing are reportedly looking to expand their race operations into Canada. As a way of getting some its development drivers currently racing in the karting ranks some competitive open-wheel seat time, the Florida-based team is evaluating options in the Ontario Formula Ford Championship. It is believed that Primus Racing principal Jon Baytos has been in touch with leading OFFC teams about potentially running drivers at selected events, with the goal of perhaps running a full campaign in 2011.

As part of two-car line-up, American Nic LeDuc and Irishman Niall Quinn are slated to drive. LeDuc is the 2007 Formula Russell Championship Champion and Rookie of the Year, while Quinn is the 2008 Formula Palmer Audi Autumn Trophy Champion.

He last raced in the historic Formula Ford 40th Anniversary event, piloting a Porter Racing Swift.

INSIDER: THE EFCN Insider has learned that Australian Daniel Erickson is poised to join the F2000 Championship Series at VIR. The British and Australian Formula Ford race winner has reportedly signed a deal with former pro F2000 series owner and renowned team owner Jon Baytos for the season-opening doubleheader. It is unsure if Erickson will contest the remainder of the season, or if it's one event deal.




Topic: Italian F3: Mason Close to Deal for 2010

INSIDER: Sources in Europe have informed The Insider that Nelson Mason is close confirming a ride in the 2010 Italian Formula 3 Championship. The Canadian, who has contested select Formula Ford and Formula Vee races in England while attending school there, has reportedly come to terms with a team, and is in the process of finalizing funding. Mason would join several other North American in the series, which is rapidly growing in stature.




Topic: F2000 Championship: Liberty Motorsports Set to Sign SCCA Standout for 2010 Campaign

UPDATE (4-01-10): It has been confirmed that Tim Kautz has joined Liberty Motorsports for the 2010 F2000 Championship Series. The Illinois native will make his pro racing and Formula Ford 2000 debut, having established himself as a leading driver in SCCA Club Racing Formula Ford competition.
INSIDER: The EFCN Insider has it on good authority that Liberty Motorsports has signed an SCCA Club Racing formula car standout to drive for the team in the 2010 edition of the F2000 Championship Series. The yet to be named driver is expected to contest the entire 14-race calendar, partnering series veteran Bobby Caldwell. The Illinois-based squad, which is focusing on pro racing this season, recently captured a podium finish in its USF2000 National championship debut.

UPDATE (3-30-10): It appears American Josef Newgarden will not be making the move to British F3 as originally thought in 2010, as The Insider has learned that he is currently in France getting ready to take part in official GP3 Series testing. It remains to be seen if the talented young racer will join the series full-time, as it is believed he is exploring options both within Europe and in Asia for the this coming season.

UPDATE (03-26-10): Andretti Autosports and Zach Veach held a media gathering during the start of Grand Prix of St. Petersburg event, announcing the American teenager will joining the Indiana-based team in the the 2010 USF2000 National Championship. A Van Diemen is on order and will be arriving at Andretti Autosport in the next few days. Veach will begin testing in early April, and may run some SCCA Club Racing Regional races ahead of a planned first race in the series in Round Three at O'Reilly Raceway Park on May 29, as part of the famed Night Before the 500 event.

INSIDER: Sources within the USF2000 National Championship community have informed The Insider that Pabst Racing has signed a South American racer for the season-opening doubleheader in St. Petersburg, Fla. The Wisconsin-based team, previously enjoyed success in the USF2000 National Championship in 1990's, and which has most recently assisted Tonis Kasemets in Atlantic Championship, are expected to confirming the signing just prior to race event this coming weekend (March 27-28). INSIDER: Dutch racer Yelmer Buurman is being linked with multiple Indy Lights champions Sam Schmidt Motorsports. The Insider has been informed that the former Superleague Formula race winner and GP2 Asia podium finisher will test an Indy Lights car for the first-time in early February, with an eye towards joining the series in 2010.

INSIDER: According to information passed on to The Insider, Ontario Formula Ford Challenge title contender Mikhail Goikhberg is expected to join the USF2000 National Championship this coming season. The move comes following the Russian-born driver having reportedly solved his USA visa problems and elected to remain in North America after graduating from a Canadian University. Goikhberg, who has been in discussions with Brian Graham Racing and JDC MotorSports about the 2010 USF2000 season, made his pro Formula Ford 2000 debut last season in a one-off event with BGR at Mosport International Raceway.

INSIDER: Information passed on to the Insider has revealed that American junior formula car star Niki Coello is posed to enter the F2000 Championship Series full-time this coming season. The four-time SCCA Formula Continental National Champion and reigning F1000 Championship race winner will enter the pro series having previously won in his series debut and lone outing during the 2008 doubleheader at Road America. It remains to be seen if Coello will pilot his Coello Racing prepared Van Diemen, or be the lead driver for a factory-backed effort by Ralph Firman Racing.
