BELDING, MICH. (May 28, 2009) - Greg Rice went to Michigan’s Grattan Raceway on Memorial weekend to debut his new Mysterian Formula FST car. After fighting to the lead and leading more than half of the 15-lap Sunday final, the fairy-tale ending never happened, as Rice was run over by Series promoter Bill Bonow with less than half a lap remaining. It was an eventful day for Bonow, who was reprimanded by the stewards for aggressive driving in the morning heat race, then punted off overall race leader Jay Novak on lap one of the final, before removing Rice from the lead on the final lap. Rice’s Mysterian was left track side in corner five with broken right rear suspension and classified with an eighth place finish. The race results were delayed for several hours as the stewards investigated. Without video evidence, Bonow was given an official reprimand and the results stood.

“I made a late decision to changeover to the Mysterian package," stated Rice "It is certainly the best-looking FST car and well-built by Sugar Grove Custom Cars. Unfortunately, I got a late start on the conversion and I was still working on the car all weekend. I was surprised to finish third in Saturdays race behind the works Evolution cars despite a broken header, overheating, and a disconnected anti-roll bar. I finished the oil cooler ductwork about 30 minutes before Sunday’s race, fixed the other broken pieces, and went racing. To win the race would have been a big upset. There are only three Mysterian FST cars, with only three previous races. We are taking on a fleet of Evolution cars which have about five years head start on us.”

Rice hopes to run the Fox40World.com Mysterian again, as the Bonow-organized series visits Nelson Ledges on June 27-28.

“We need to do some testing, but I think we have a good baseline," added the multiple Formula First champion. "This new car has different front and rear suspension than I have used before, so we need to get the car repaired and fine tune the package.”

Formula First is a Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) regional class for single-seat formula cars based on 1600cc air-cooled Beetle components. It is an entry level class with spec tires and controlled costs.
