EFCN Driver Rankings

eFormulaCarNews.com - in its continued efforts to continually enhance coverage of the junior formula car racing - is pleased to announce the introduction of the EFCN Driver Rankings. The newly-created program takes results from the North American pro categories and drops them into our own proven ranking equation to produce a listing that, for the first time, will combine all of the up-and coming drivers into one offering. The EFCN Driver Rankings package has been carefully designed to take into consideration the many different variables in an effort to properly weigh the results, with an emphasis placed on the field strength and field size. The following is an explanation of how the points are calculated:

The EFCN Driver Rankings are calculated using a driver’s best finishes in the pro junior formula car series raced in North America (Indy Lights, Pro Mazda Championship, USF2000 Championship, F2000 Championship Series, Pacific F2000 Championship, F1600 Formula F Championship Series, and Pacific F1600 Championship). Assembled using events from the last 12 months, we use a driver’s best 10 finishes in order to determine their overall current point total. With each new month, results from the previous year are discarded to deliver the current ranking list.

Each series was initially weighted based on its prestige and history, the events and tracks at which it races, and of course the depth of talent, with a score of 10 being the highest attainable base ranking. For 2012, Indy Lights were given a base ranking of 9.4, Star Mazda was placed with a 9.2 score, F2000 Championship and USF2000 Championship have a base ranking of 9.1, F1600 Championship has a base ranking of 9, while the Pacific F2000 and F1600 Championship have a ranking of 8.9.

Added to the initial base ranking is the variable of field size, which helps confirm the importance, strength and competitiveness of the series. A percentage of one weighting point is added for the size of the field, with a full field of 30 cars or more providing one full point. Another full point or fraction of a point will be added based on the field strength of each event. The percentage of the top-50 ranked drivers in the race will also be factored into the final event ranking. The sum of these numbers becomes the overall ranking for any race.

Following a race, drivers receive points based on their finishing positions with 100 points earned for a win. Each subsequent position drops by one point with 99 points given to the second place driver and so on throughout the field. These points are then multiplied by the overall ranking to produce a driver’s final point total from each event. Using a driver’s best 10 races, we calculate each driver’s overall score and subsequent ranking.

EFCN Driver Rankings - July 8, 2012

Just as the temperatures are heating up across North America, so is the fight for top honors in the 2012 EFCN Driver Rankings. Despite no change among the top-two of the standings, the gaps between the drivers at the pointy end of the leaderboard are steadily shrinking as we present the July edition of the rankings.

Esteban Guerrieri remains the racer everyone is looking up at in the latest EFCN Driver Rankings, as the Argentinean has increased his points tally to 10,304 thanks to another impressive month behind the wheel. The second-year Sam Schmidt Motorsports star got the ball rolling in the Indy Lights return to oval competition with a third place result (1009 pts) at the historic Milwaukee Mile. One week later the championship leader was even more impressive at the Iowa Speedway, scoring his third victory (1037 pts) of the season. Initially it appeared Guerrieri was poised to continue his run of form on the streets of Toronto, unfortunately a first lap incident meant he had to battle his way forward to a sixth place finish (980 pts). While the highly rated racer has seen his advantage over the chasing pack shrink, victories at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (1045 pts) and on the streets of Long Beach (1037 pts) earlier in the campaign ensure Guerrieri is still on pace to challenge for both a Indy Lights title and the No. 1 position on the EFCN Driver rankings come the end of the season.

EFCN Driver Rankings - June 23, 2010

While summer is not particularly know as a time of change, that certainly is the case in the June edition of the eFormulaCarNews.com Driver Rankings. With a new points tally of 10303, Juncos Racing driver becomes the first Star Mazda race pilot to lead the rankings. It should however not be a surprise, given his performances behind the wheel to start the 2010 race campaign. Daly started the year off with a third place finish at Sebring (1019 pts), and has followed that up with wins in St Petersburg (1039 pts), Laguna Seca (1030 pts), O’Reilly Raceway Park (1033 pts) and Iowa Speedway (1030 pts). Given this impressive run, and the fact he only has one result outside of the top-three counting towards his points total, you can see why the second generation driver looks poised to make is stay at the top of the rankings a lengthy one.

EFCN Driver Rankings - April 16, 2010

With all the pro junior formula car championships now underway, it is time to unveil the initial eFormulaCarNews.com Driver Rankings for 2010.

Given results carry over from one calendar year, it comes as no surprise that the top-two of the EFCN Driver Rankings are racers who enjoyed standouts seasons in 2009. Ideally they would not be included, having earned a ride in the upper echelon of the open-wheel competition in North America or a full-time ride in sports car competition, that however is not the case currently.

American standout J.R. Hildebrand begins the 2010 race season as he ended the 2009 campaign, No. 1 on EFCN Driver Rankings. The current unemployed racer, remains a top of the rankings thanks to a championship-winning run in the Indy Lights series and a points tally of 10458. Hildebrand, who still has four wins and nine podium finishes counting towards his total, is one of only three racers to have 1000+ scores in all 10 scoring races.

EFCN Driver Rankings - March 27, 2009

After a great deal of hard work and spirited discussion by the eFormulaCarNews.com staff, the inaugural EFCN Driver Rankings are ready to be unveiled. Utilizing results from the entire 2008 race season, the top positions in the rankings feature drivers who many could have expected, as well as a few surprises. While Italian-American Richard Antinucci may have just missed out on winning the 2008 Firestone Indy Lights title, he leads the way in the inaugural EFCN Driver Rankings. Thanks to a pair of race wins, eight podiums, nine top-fives, and no finishes outside the top-10 when taking into account his 10 best results, Antinucci generated an overall score of 9995 to lead all drivers in the debut of the program. It is both interesting and disappointing to see that as of this debut, Antinucci does not have a ride heading into the '09 season.

Making it an Indy Lights one-two at the top of the first-ever EFCN Driver Rankings, series champion Raphael Matos generated the second highest points total. The Brazilian earned 9941 points from his best 10 results in 2008, with three wins and seven podiums being the highlight. Matos' graduation to the upper echelon of the Indy Racing League will pull him from the rankings, but for now, we'll keep him in his current position. Anders Krohn lies third in the initial rankings, following a superb first season racing in North America. The Norwegian standout scored 9934 points in his championship-winning F2000 Championship Series season, thanks in large part to nine wins and 10 podium finishes. Krohn's domination of the F2000 program helped him position this highly in the first calculation of the results, and his move to Mundill in the Star Mazda program should help him stay in the top-10.

Showcasing the depth of talent in the 2008 Indy Lights series, Brazilian Ana Beatriz sits in fourth place in the initial driver rankings. The series Rookie of the Year generated a points a total of 9900 via one win and six podium finishes in her first season of racing in North America. Beatriz is back with Sam Schmidt Motorsports for '09 and continued success could see her take a run at the #1 position. Star Mazda Champion John Edwards completes the top-five following a strong first season in the series. The America won four times and stood on the podium eight times en route to scoring 9868 points in the rankings. Edwards will now look to improve on his position, running with Newman Wachs racing in the Cooper Tires Atlantic Championship Powered by Mazda.

Other drivers of note in the inaugural driver rankings are Atlantic Champion Markus Niemela (11th - 9777 pts), Pacific F2000 Champion Jeff Westphal (43rd - 9197 pts), Formula BMW Americas Champion Alexander Rossi (44th - 9191 pts) and Skip Barber National Champion Conor Daly (22nd - 9504 pts).
