Walker Racing has announced a new partnership with NexGen MTD with the goal of entering Filipino/American Michele Bumgarner in the 2009 Indy Lights series.
In preparation for the 2009 racing season, Indianapolis-based Walker Racing has formed a new long-term business partnership with NexGen MTD, which was formed to seek out and develop the best young men and women in motorsports. As part of this new driver development program, the plan is for Bumgarner to compete in the 2009 Indy Lights championship, with final details yet be finalized. In addition to the planned new program, Walker Racing is set to return to the Atlantic Championship in 2009 with a multi-car effort.
As the first member of the joint Walker Racing NexGen MTD program, Bumgarner enters the 2009 seasons having already impressed many with her skill behind the wheel. Starting in karting, she quickly advanced up the ranks, winning four Asian Karting Open Championship titles. Making the move to cars, she has competed in the Asian Formula 3 Championship, Italian Masters series, Toyota Racing Seres and Star Mazda Championship over the past few years.
Walker Racing team owner Derrick Walker is a long-time member of the racing community, with over 40 years of racing experience. For 18 of those years he has acted as team owner, taking part in multiple open-wheel championships. For the past several years, Walker Racing has contested multiple cars in the highly competitive Atlantic Championship, capturing the 2006 series title with French rookie Simon Pagenaud.
In association with NexGen MTD, Bumgarner is currently finalizing her deal with Walker Racing, with plans to begin an off-season testing program in the New Year. |
