The 2008 F2000 Championship Series presented by Hoosier Racing Tire season came to a close on Sunday (September 21st), with Round 14 at New Jersey Motorsports Park. Andersen Racing’s Anders Krohn scored the victory on the Thunderbolt Raceway circuit, leading Andersen racing’s Jonny Baker and Brian Graham Racing’s Kyle Marcelli to the checkered flag.
Only hours after the grid was set via the morning qualifying session, the F2000 drivers rolled on-course for the season-finale race under clear and sunny skies. With Krohn and Marcelli leading the field to the start/finish, the field immediately went two and three wide upon the waving of the green flag. Holding the ideal inside line into the first turn, the race one winner Krohn led Baker, Andersen Racing’s Doug Prendeville, ZSports Midwest’s Bobby Caldwell and Marcelli through the opening set of turns. Immediately attacking the high-speed road course, it was not long before gaps began appearing among the leaders. Within four laps, Krohn was over three seconds ahead of Baker, who in turn was two-three seconds in front of the three-car fight for third place.
Running in close formation, Prendeville held the position over Marcelli and Caldwell lap after lap. Not far behind the battle for the final podium position, Ski Motorsports’ Tim Minor and R-Sport’s Tim Dunn diced for both top Masters honors in the race and championship.
As the race progressed and battles for position developed deeper in the field, the lead pack became more and more separated. Krohn, continually extended his lead over Baker via the fastest laps of the race, while the runner-up retained a multi-car advantage over Marcelli, having worked his way past Prendeville. Running unchallenged the entire second half of the 15-lap race, Krohn completed championship-winning season with his ninth win of the year. His teammate Baker and fellow series rookie Marcelli joined in the podium celebrations, while Prendeville and Minor completed the top-five in Round 14. Minor was presented the GTP Race Components Masters award, earning a total of 60 points the doubleheader, while GTP Motorsports’ Paul Farmer earned the G. JEZARIAN Pass Master Award honors, advancing 13 places in the two races.
While the final championship results are still provisional given protests to Round 13, Krohn exited New Jersey as the 2008 F2000 Championship Series presented by Hoosier Racing Tire champion. Baker ended the year second in the title fight, one point ahead of Marcelli, while JDC MotorSports’ Chris Miller and Minor completed the top-five. Among the Masters contingent, Minor captured the series title ahead of Dunn and GTP Motorsports’ Peter Gonzalez. Fourth and fifth in the class were CraigAutoSales.com Racing’s Craig Clawson and ADA/Wright Racing’s Bob Wright.
