MUKILTEO, WAS. (November 01, 2006) – Carl Skerlong, the reigning Formula TR Pro Series 2000 Champion, will make his European open-wheel racing debut this weekend, November 4–5, as the 18 year-old American gets set to compete in the first two races of the four-round 2006 Formula Renault UK Championship with Michelin Winter Series at Brands Hatch in England.

The 1.9km Indy Circuit at Brands plays host to Rounds One and Two of the Winter Series, with North Yorkshire’s Croft Circuit hosting Rounds Three and Four next weekend, November 11th, in what’s expected to be a hotly contested series with the grid numbers already maxed out with a capacity line up of 28 Formula Renault 2.0-litre cars.

Skerlongs European campaign sees him paired up with the championship winning team from the regular 2006 Formula Renault UK Series, Fortec Motorsport. The Daventry-based outfit enjoyed a stellar season competing in Formula Renault in 2006 with the team placing three of its drivers, all race winners, in the top-six of the final driver standings, with Sweden’s Sebastian Hohenthal lifting overall honors. To compliment their Formula Renault successes, Fortec claimed additional titles and race wins in British Formula BMW and Formula Three to cap an outstanding year for the team.

“I’m really looking forward to racing at Brands this weekend,” exclaimed Skerlong as he prepared to make his European debut. “I’ve had a great time in the UK so far and I’m really pleased with the relationship I’m building with everyone at Fortec. I’ve learned a lot in testing and I’ve certainly had plenty of running in the wet which will hopefully serve me well as the weather’s so unpredictable at this time of year in England. The standard of competition is so high here but I’ve held my own and can’t wait to finally go racing on Sunday.”

The Anglo-American pairing of Fortec and Skerlong has been a productive one since Skerlong arrived in England a couple of weeks ago. Two day tests at both Croft and Norfolk’s Snetterton Circuit allowed the youngster the opportunity to get dialed into Fortec’s Formula Renault 2.0 car and acclimatize not only to the British weather, but running on Michelin rubber as opposed to the Yokohama’s he ran in the Formula TR Pro Series, where he lifted back-to-back titles in 2005 and 2006 in 1.6-litre and 2.0 Formula Renault cars.

The tests also allowed Skerlong the opportunity to measure himself against his Fortec team-mates for the forthcoming Winter Series and the American proved himself to be up to speed as he notched up the test miles heading into this weekend’s double-header at Brands Hatch. He will be joined in the Fortec line up by Ireland’s Niall Breen, 2006 Formula BMW UK Champion, and Englishmen Richard Keen and Riki Christodoulou, Keen the winner of last season’s Formula Renault ‘Graduate Cup’ Champion with Christodoulou graduating up to ‘slicks and wings’ racing from karting.
