Bringing the FormulaCar Magazine Formula SCCA Central Division season to a close, the program's competitors raced at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course on the September 9-10 weekend. Leading the way at the technical track were rookie Corey Dalenberg and Justin Huffman, each scoring a win over the weekend.
Utilizing a split start, the opening race of the doubleheader commenced with some confusion, as numerous cars were passed before the waving of the green flag. Despite the jumbling of positions, Dalenberg and Denny Marklein were soon in control of the race. Setting a blistering pace while working their way past slower cars, the duo quickly built a sizeable lead on the third place car. Dicing for the final podium position, Steve Stadel led Jay Leeman for the first half of the race, before Huffman found a way past the duo.
As the race progressed, Dalenberg, in his first FSCCA race, worked traffic to perfection building a slight gap on Marklein. On the closing lap of the race, Huffman got within striking distance of Marklein and pressured the two-time race winner. Leading every lap, Dalenberg captured his first Formula SCCA win ahead of Marklein, who held off Huffman's last lap challenges.
Contesting the final race of season in the division, Huffman led the FSCCA field to the green flag on Sunday, having earned the pole position earlier in the day. Returning to the standard starting procedure, Dalenberg got a got jump and pulled alongside Huffman into turn one. Running side-by-side through turn one and down to the famed Keyhole turn, the position was only decided when Dalenberg carried too much speed into the turn, allowing Huffman to pull ahead on the exit. Huffman attacked the pro track configuration quickly to establish a gap on Dalenberg, while Marklein lurked in third place. Unlike the previous race, which witnessed the leaders working their way through traffic with relative ease, slower cars repeatedly held up Huffman. Using the opportunity to his advantage, Dalenberg closed the gap on the leader in the closing stages of the race. Never allowing the youngster to get within striking distance, Huffman scored his third win in four races ahead of Dalenberg and Marklein.
With the Central Division schedule completed, Stadel captures the title provisionally, as drivers can still score points in two out of division races. Two races remain in both the Northeast and Southwest Divisions, prior to the Formula SCCA Championship National Champion race at Road Atlanta. Racing in conjunction with the Atlanta Region's SCCA American Road Race of Champions (ARRC) event, the top FSCCA drivers from around the country will battle for bragging rights on November 10-12.
