RP Motorsport has got a new one-two finish in the European F3 Open series on Sunday (July 14), after a superb performance from Santiago Urrutia and Sandy Stuvik at the Silverstone Circuit in England. With the runner-up finish, Stuvik increases his lead in the overall standing. The Copa class was won by Richard Gonda (Drivex), the Slovakian also pulling away in the overall classification after a troublesome Saturday.

Urrutia, who is 16 years old, set the pole position in the morning, after a closely-fought battle with Stuvik, and the second row was made up of the Team West-Tec duo of Ed Jones and Canadian Nelson Mason. At the start, Urrutia and Stuvik kept first and second place, while behind Mason overtook Jones to take third place. On lap three, both RP Motorsport cars were looking too strong for Mason and Jones, pulling away from the duo and the rest of the field. Drama hit Mason, first being passed by Jones, and just a few meters after Hector Hurst (Emilio de Villota Motorsport) and clashed, ending their chances at a place on the podium.

The fight for victory was wide open until the end, with Stuvik trying to overtake Urrutia, with no success. In the end, it was a great result for RP Motorsport, Urrutia – who now lies third overall - winning, Stuvik second, increasing his lead. Jones reached the checkered flag nine seconds later in third, continuing to hold second overall in the title fight.

Spain´s Alex Toril (RP Motorsport) was fourth after another good race for Córdoba-born driver. He lost some places on lap one, but he had a steady recovery lap by lap. Alexandre Cougnaud (RP Motorsport), Yarin Stern (Emilio de Villota Motorsport), and Alexey Chuklin (Emilio de Villota Motorsport) were fun to watch, battling each other. The Russian driver was fifth, but on lap 11 he got passed by Cougnaud and Stern. Anyway the Frenchman got a 30 seconds penalty after the race, so fifth place was for Stern and Chuklin was sixth. Emil Bernstorff (Team West-Tec), making his series debut, has finished seventh at his home round, with both BVM drivers, Vicky Piria and Mario Marasca, close behind. Mason was a DNF, having retired on lap five.

In the Copa, Gonda took another win at the wheel of the Drivex Dallara F308. Gonda claimed another pole position in second qualifying session, and despite struggling to pass some cars at the start, his race pace was quite faster than his rivals´. He won after overtaking even some Dallara F312 cars. Cameron Twynham (Team West-Tec) ended up second, and third was for Mexico´s Gerardo Nieto (DAV Racing). It´s worth noting, both Tommaso Menchini (Corbetta Competizioni) and Nicholas Pohler (DAV Racing) retired after podium finishes in race one.

The European F3 Open season continues on September 7-8, with two races at the Circuit Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium.

The top-three, along with how the North American racers did, will be posted following every session on the EFCN Facebook page, and EFCN Twitter page.
