TORONTO, ONT. (August 2, 2012) - Nicholas Latifi, a member of the Sofina Foods Drivers' Development Program, will make a return to the Red Bull Ring this weekend after a successful testing program just two short weeks ago.
The first year formula car racer is looking to make strides in the second half of the 16-round F3 Italia Series season. The 16 year-old racer and his JD Motorsports team have been hard at work to prepare their assault on the remaining four weekends of racing action. The first four races of the season have been a significant learning experience for Latifi, as coming directly out of karting into F3 has been an exciting challenge.
"At the test at Red Bull Ring I was second to my teammate Ricardo," commented Latifi. "I am looking forward to the race and I have set my sites on a top three finish. I am focused on continuing to improve and develop as a driver for the remainder of the season and to strive for better results, lap times, and racing for the last four events of the season."
Latifi has set a goal to be able to run with the top drivers by the end of the season and finish in the top three before the season concludes at the legendary Monza Circuit. While an aggressive goal, the rookie racer is never really happy or satisfied unless he has a chance at winning. The Canadian/Italian driver is focused and committed to do what he needs to do to be in a position to win races.
"Switching from the Dallara to the Mygale was a positive move, however it was difficult, as I had all my pre-season testing mileage in the Dallara and then to switch after the second race was difficult," continued Latifi. "I had to adjust my driving, understanding of the car and the general feel of the car is different. I am pleased with the Mygale and feel it is a great car. The Dallara was also a great car to drive, I just think the Mygale has suited me more."
After two weekends in Italy, the F3 Italia Series steps over the border to Austria then is set to return for the final three weekends in Italy. With eight rounds completed and eight more to go, Latifi is excited about the second half of the season.
"The Red Bull Ring two-day test was similar to the Imola test, where we found a good setup, the car had a good balance and I was top four the first day and was able to end the last day second fastest," remarked Latifi. "I like every track I go to and they are all new to me, so I need to first learn the track then work with my engineer to set the car up. We will see, but I am really confident in my chances at Red Bull Ring. I am hoping it will be a good race with lots of competition and hopefully some passing action."
Latifi and the JD Motorsports team make the first and only stop in Austria as they head to the Red Bull Ring.
The Sofina Foods Drivers' Development Program was created to help Canadian karting series offer young drivers a goal and a prize to work towards. In 2010 and 2011, the Sofina program supported the Eastern Canadian Karting Championship as well as Team Canada drivers going to the Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals. The Sofina Foods Drivers' Development Program is proud to support Canadian drivers reaching the international motorsports stage.
