Another great performance for RP Motorsport´s Niccolo Schiro completed the European F3 Open sweep on Sunday (July), winning twice at Circuit Paul Ricard, despite opposition from Gianmarco Raimondo (RP Motorsport) . Mans Grenhagen completed the podium and Moises Soriano (Cedars) won the Cup classification.
Schiro set the pole position time early in the morning, clearly beating anyone else, with his teammate Raimondo's Dallara F312 almost half a second behind. Facu Regalia (Campos Racing), Grenhagen (Emilio de Villota Motorsport) finished behind on Sunday´s qualifying session.
At the start, Schiro managed to keep his leadership and, shortly after, he pulled away with Raimondo behind. Both RP Motorsport drivers made an important gap and the victory would be for one of them. Raimondo tried to pass Schiro until last moment, but the Italian driver didn´t get nervous and won his second race ever in the series.
Third place was closely fought by three different drivers, with Regalia, Grenhage, and Sam Dejonghe (Team West-Tec F3) going head-to-head. After overtaking Regalia on lap one, Dejonghe was third for a while, but then, with five laps to go, Grenhagen passed him after a previous vibrant duel with Regalia. Grenhagen clinched another podium finish ahead of Dejonghe and Regalia, fourth and fifth respectively separated by a mere tenth. Noel Jammal (Cedars Auto Sport) and Tatiana Calderón (Emilio de Villota Motorsport) ended up sitxh and seventh respectively.
In the Cup classification, after an early retirement of Kevin Giovesi (DAV Racing), Alexandre Cougnaud (Top F3) – fastest driver in the second qualifying session among Copa drivers and Soriano fought each other for the win, with the Spanish teen winning finally the race. Cougnaud was finally second – a very productive weekend for him- and Gerard Barrabeig (Corbetta Competizioni) third.
The European F3 Open teams next take to the Hungaroring outside of Budapest on September 8-9.
The top-three, along with how the North American racers did, will be posted following every session on the EFCN Facebook page, and EFCN Twitter page.
