ELKHART LAKE, WIS. (July 17, 2012) – ArmsUp Motorsports made its first vintage racing start of the season this past weekend at The Hawk with Brian Redman at Road America. One of the biggest vintage events in the country, The Hawk features some of the most recognizable racecars from motorsports glorious past. ArmsUp Motorsports brought two cars to the summer classic. Walter Vollrath campaigned his 1978 Lola 497 C-Sports Racer (CSR). Rick Balsley, driving his 1969 Brabham Formula B car, made his first race start since undergoing neck surgery last year. Vollrath went on to win the Historic CSR class with Balsley putting in a fine drive from the back to third in Vintage FB after a difficult heat race.

Both ArmsUp drivers faced a little bit of adversity during a weekend that featured the sweltering heat wave that had gripped the Midwest. In the test day Vollrath, who was also making his first start of the race season, had a clutch failure that sidelined the Elkhart Lake native for a part of the day. During Saturday's qualifying heat, Balsley had to withdraw after he discovered an improperly balanced set of rear tires on his Brabham. The vibration was so violent he could not take the green-flag, which forced Balsley to start shot-gun on the field.

Balsley put in the drive of the race. At the Hawk, each race group has several classes running at the same time, which meant that Balsley had to make his way through several different classes of cars just to race for position in the quick Formula B class. The ArmsUp driver did not disappoint the team's hometown fans running up to third in his class and a fine fourth over-all. Vollrath drove a smart and steady race in the CSR group to bring home the class victory for the second straight year.

"This is always such a great event to be a part of," Gregg Borland commented after the weekend. "The cars that run here, and the number of people that come out to the track just make it a really good time. Both Rick and Walter drove well, especially considering neither had been in a car this year up until this weekend. I'm already looking forward to running this event again next year."

ArmsUp Motorsports returns to the current era this weekend, as the team rolls right back into the Road America grounds for the SCCA Cat National. Jerry Szykulski will look to continue his dominant Formula Continental form that has carried him to four straight wins.

Formed in 1995, ArmsUp Motorsports is one of the premier SCCA Formula Continental race teams, winning the SCCA National Championship in 2011. Based in Elkhart Lake, Wis., ArmsUp Motorsports is a full service prep shop for USF2000, Formula Continental, Formula Atlantic, and Vintage racing cars.
