Team Pelfrey Jack Hawksworth made the most of a dry track before the rain came to post a record setting lap en route to earning the Star Mazda Championship presented Goodyear PEAK Performance Pole Award for Round Seven on the streets of Toronto. Joining the current Rookie of the Year leader on the front-row will Andretti Autosport's Sage Karam.
Piloting the No. 82 Team Pelfrey/TORGOEN Swiss Watches/EXA Networks entry, Hawksworth was quick when it mattered during the lone qualifying run around the streets of Canadian National Exhibition grounds. With Karam in the No. 88 Andretti Autosport/Comfort Revolution Mazda in hot pursuit on the timecharts, the British rookie was at the top of the speedcharts when the session was red flagged for a significant crash involving his Team Pelfrey teammate Petri Suvanto exiting the final turn. While it initially looked like qualifying would resume, Mother Nature had other ideas via sudden heavy rain shower, bring the session to a close prematurely.
Andretti Autosport's Zach Veach in the No. 77 Andretti Autosport/K12/Zakosi Data Backup Mazda was third fastest, while the No. 22 Juncos Racing/Pullman Bus Mazda of Martin Scuncio completes the second row for the first race of the Toronto doubleheader. Suvanto, who lost his fastest lap for bringing out the red flag, will start fifth in the No. 81 Team Pelfrey/Mazda Road to Indy Mazda.
Unfortunately for championship leader Connor De Phillippi, the red flag was displayed at the wrong time, as No. 2 Juncos Racing/ModSpace Racing/One24 Mazda was just about to roll on-course with fresh tires and go after a fast lap. As result, De Phillippi will start an uncharacteristic 15th.
Hawksworth's fast lap of 1:07.968 thoroughly destroyed the Star Mazda lap record of 1:08.755 set by Dane Cameron in 2007, the last time series raced in Toronto.
The Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear cars and drivers return to the 2.84-kilometer, 11-turn street circuit on Saturday afternoon (July 7) with Round Seven.
The top-three will be posted following every session on the EFCN Facebook page, and EFCN Twitter page.
