ST. PETERSBURG, FLA. (July 3, 2012) – In his F1600 Formula F Championship Series debut, Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing driver Shae Davies won both races at New Jersey Motorsports Park on June 30 and July 1.
Davies hoped to perform well in the No. 9 Honda Spectrum. He could not have had a better weekend.
"It feels fantastic to get a result such as this weekend at NJMP,” Davies said. “The success this weekend is a credit to Spectrum Racing Cars, Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing, Borland Racing, and all the crews. It was a fantastic race (race two) with Matias in tough heat conditions which really challenged us both, and it feels fantastic to come out on top with the double race win. I'm off back home now to Australia to compete in my championship this coming weekend on different tires once again, so that will be another challenge. I cannot wait to come back here for the next round at Mid-Ohio in a few weeks and have another go."
Matias Köykkä also had a good weekend in the No. 10 Honda Spectrum. After claiming the pole for Race 1, he was leading late in the race, but after accidently turning off the engine, he finished sixth.
He was able to recover in race two, where he traded the lead with Davies and finished second.
“The weekend was quite an extreme one, with toasting temperatures and thunderstorms,” Köykkä said. “On Saturday (race one) we were looking good for a clear win, but I accidentally switched off the engine. That was disappointing, but we came back on Sunday (race two) and gained some important points on the championship. It was a very strong weekend from the whole team, and we really dominated the races. I'm looking forward to turn the championship positions to our advantage in the next round at Mid-Ohio.”
Davies, a Spectrum Borland Racing Factory Driver in Australia, will also join the team at Mid-Ohio and Watkins Glen.
“We couldn't have asked for more - two poles, two wins and a dominate 1-2 finish in the second race," said team owner Dominic Cape. "In the second race, our team cars finished in front of the field by 20 seconds. The No. 9 Spectrum chassis and Honda engine came to us in crates just a couple weeks ago. It is a testament to the Spectrum and Honda Performance Development guys - a big thanks from the team. We are extremely pleased with the performance of both drivers, and we look forward to the next rounds at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.”
The team will next be racing at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course July 26-29. For more information on the series, please visit http://www.f1600series.com You can follow the team on Facebook and Twitter (CMwithWTR) for updates.
