| F1600 Championship: Davies Joins Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing |
ST. PETERSBURG, FLA. (June 28, 2012) – The Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing team and driver Matias Köykkä will be joined by driver Shae Davis when the team returns to the track for this weekend’s F1600 Formula F Championship Series races at New Jersey Motorsports Park.
Davis, 22, is a Spectrum Factory driver for Borland Racing in Australia and will join the team for the events at New Jersey, Mid-Ohio, and Watkins Glen. He will drive the No. 9 Honda Spectrum.
"To be offered the opportunity to represent Spectrum/Borland Racing in the USA with Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing was a hugely exciting prospect,” Davis said. “The Spectrum factory team in Australia has grown increasingly competitive this year and the chance to race the Spectrum brand in the USA was an offer too good to refuse.
"We've been genuine front-runners in Australia all year, and I'm hoping that racing on new circuits will help with my continued development while at the same time further endorse the Spectrum brand and that of Cape Motorsports. I can't wait to go racing and try and challenge for the win.”
Davis will be able to get advice from teammate Köykkä, who has two wins this season (VIR and Lime Rock Park). The young Finnish driver is hoping to add another piece of hardware to his growing collection this weekend at the 2.25-mile, 13-turn track located less than an hour from Philadelphia.
“The goal for this weekend at New Jersey is much like at VIR and Lime Rock, as it's a new track for me again,” said Köykkä. “We will definitely be looking for wins, but that requires taking advantage of the practice sessions. It's always an arduous process to learn the track and optimize the setup.”
Köykkä is currently third in the driver point standings. He is only two points behind second-place Jeremy Grenier (139-137). He has claimed two poles and posted the fastest lap of the race twice in just the first four races.
“Matias has learned the tracks quickly,” team owner Dominic Cape said. “We expect him to do well at New Jersey. We have had some bad luck in the second races at both VIR and Lime Rock, so we are hoping to have two solid races at New Jersey.
“We are very pleased to welcome Shae to the team. He is another great young driver, and we are looking forward to giving him more experience on more tracks. We are looking forward to a great weekend for both drivers and the Spectrum chassis.”
The team will first be on track June 29th for two 30-minute practice sessions at 11 a.m. and 2:05 p.m. Qualifying and race one will be held on June 30th – qualifying will be held at 8 a.m. and race one will go green at 10:40 a.m. Qualifying for race two is July 1st at 8 a.m. and race two is scheduled for 11:35 a.m. All times are ET.
