MINNEAPOLIS, MN. (June 21, 2012) – The quest for Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear supremacy resumes for three-time series champion JDC MotorSports on Saturday night (June 23), when Round Six takes place at the Iowa Speedway. Completing the two-race oval portion of the Mazda Road to Indy series, Gabby Chaves, Ashley Freiberg, and Juan Piedrahita will again be behind the wheels for the Minnesota-based squad, and given the early season run of form - three podium finishes and top-10 results in every round - JDC is positioned to challenge for tops honors on the banked oval.
After getting their 2012 oval racing feet wet just under a month ago during the famed Night Before the 500 event in Indiana, the talented JDC MotorSports trio of Chaves, Freiberg, and Piedrahita will get a second opportunity to showcase their circle track skills during the Iowa Speedway Foundation 100. While the 0.875-mile tri-oval significantly differs from the only other oval on the Star Mazda calendar this season - Lucas Oil Raceway - it does not mean the JDC racers enter Round Six unprepared.
As a seven-year Star Mazda competitor, JDC MotorSports has contested every series race on an oval, including all three previous visits to the Iowa Speedway. This is likely to play a factor when the cars roll on-course, as track knowledge and car setup are key to success when racing on an oval. Add in the fact the standout junior formula squad has secured three top-fives and seven top-10s in the previous series visits, in addition to earning two USF2000 Championships podium finishes at the Rusty Wallace designed track, it definitely gives the JDC racers an edge come race time.
Given Chaves (No. 19 OMP/Red Line Oil/JDC MotorSports), Freiberg (No. 91 TrueCar.com/Red Line Oil/JDC MotorSports), and Piedrahita (No. 9 GFK Motors/Red Line Oil/JDC MotorSports) have never raced in Iowa, the plan earlier on will be to get the up-and-coming racers acclimated to the new surroundings, and begin fine tuning the racing steeds to the conditions and their driving styles. Fortunately three practice runs prior to single-car qualifying and the one hour race will provide the opportunity to do just that.
"I am really looking forward to Iowa," commented Freiberg. "I know that I am still adapting to this car after coming from Skip Barber, but have made some good strides forward, and am planning on making more this weekend and through the rest of the season. I know the guys at JDC have been working hard as well, so hopefully the results will show that!"
"I'm really looking forward to this weekend’s race," stated Piedrahita. "We need to fight for top honors in order to continue in the chase for the championship. I'm really confident that my team will give me a good car. We have made some progress since Indy, and I'm sure we can be fast in Iowa."
The on-track action for the JDC MotorSports racers at the Iowa Speedway commences on Friday (June 22), with two 30-minute practice sessions. Race day in the Hawkeye state features a third morning practice run, followed by single-car qualifying in the mid-afternoon and the one-hour Iowa Speedway Foundation 100 at 5:20 pm local time. Live timing and scoring will be available at http://www.starmazda.com/timing JDC MotorSports enters Round Six third in the team standings, with Chaves and Piedrahita currently fourth and fifth in the championship chase respectively.

Involved in formula car racing since its inception in 1994, JDC MotorSports has established itself as one of the leading junior open-wheel teams in North America. Initially making its mark in the F2000 class of club racing competition, JDC MotorSports was soon a team worth watching in the pro ranks. Competing in the Formula Ford 2000 Zetec Championship, the team not only won races, but also helped develop multiple young drivers. In 2005, JDC MotorSports expanded its efforts, entering the Star Mazda Championship. Quickly becoming one of the top teams in the series, JDC captured both the driver and team titles in 2007, as well as Rookie of the Year honors, with Dane Cameron scoring a series-high three wins. In 2008, JDC MotorSports was the runner-up in the Star Mazda Championship and finished fourth in its inaugural season of F2000 Championship Series competition. The Minnesota-based team won the Star Mazda Championship title with Rookie of the Year Adam Christodoulou, and the F2000 Championship Series title with Chris Miller in 2009. The following year, JDC continued its winning ways, earning the Rookie of the Year award in the Star Mazda Championship with Connor De Phillippi, and scoring a non-points win in the USF2000 National Championship. The Minneapolis-based squad won a third Star Mazda Championship with Tristan Vautier in 2011, in addition to being victorious in the USF2000 National Championship and earning multiple podium finishes in its Prototype Lites Championship debut campaign. JDC MotorSports will once again contest full seasons in the Star Mazda Championship, USF2000 National Championship, and Prototype Lites Championship in 2012. |
