WAYSIDE, N.J. (June 12, 2012) – When high school student and international race car driver Trent Hindman returns to the European portion of his racing schedule this weekend with Cliff Dempsey Racing at the Thruxton Circuit, outside Andover, England, for Round 6 & 7 of the 2012 Protyre Formula Renault BARC Championship, he will be focusing on what has been his Achilles’ heel thus far this season; standing starts.
Unlike the rolling starts of the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda, the Protyre Formula Renault BARC utilizes a standing start format. Hindman, who would be seventh in Formula Renault BARC points if he were registered for the championship, has qualified and raced well in the first five rounds of the season, but has lost positions on the opening lap of each race because of his lack of experience with standing starts. Learning this skill will be important as he moves up the European racing ladder, and when he moves up to the Star Mazda Championship, one of the few U.S. based racing series that uses the standing start.
“While I’ve done standing starts here and there, it isn’t something I have a lot of experience with yet,” said Hindman from his Wayside, N.J. home. “I’m getting better at it every weekend but because of my travel schedule practice time is at a premium.”
Just outside the town of Andover on the A303 sits the Thruxton Motorsports Centre, which includes an airfield, a karting track and the 2.4-mile Thruxton Circuit. If you’ve ever been a tourist in England and traveled from London down to Stonehenge, you’ve driven past the Thruxton and probably not even realized that you’ve passed the “fastest circuit in the U.K.”
Like the Snetterton, Croft, and Silverstone Circuits that are part of the 2012 Formula Renault BARC schedule, Thruxton started life as a RAF/USAAF airbase in the 1940s and was a launching point for paratroopers during the D-Day invasion of northern France in 1944. Opened to racing in 1950, Thruxton is a mainstay of the British Touring Car Championship schedule and the home of the British Automobile Racing Club.
“They don’t yet offer Thruxton on iRacing so I’ve been learning the track on rFactor. What I’ve learned is that it is very fast and you are at full throttle for a vast majority of the lap. On the computer at least it reminds me a bit of Lime Rock Park, but a little longer, with elevation changes and with higher speed turns.”
Wayside, N.J. native Trent Hindman comes to the 2012 Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda off a diverse season of racing that includes winning the Ontario Formula Ford Championship, a runner-up finish in the BFGoodrich/Skip Barber National Presented by Mazda and selection to the prestigious Team USA Scholarship. Hindman will return to the U.K. in 2012 with Cliff Dempsey Racing to contest the Formula Renault BARC Championship. A former Skip Barber Karting Scholarship Shoot-out winner, Hindman’s goal is to progress through the “Mazda Road to Indy” program, culminating in a ride in the IZOD IndyCar Series. Hindman is racing with defending USF2000 champions Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing and would like to thank Sparco, Premier Woodcraft, Racelite Protection and Altemus Prime Communications for their support.
Away from the track, Hindman attends Ocean Township High School in Oakhurst, N.J. He resides in Wayside with his parents Doug and Kim and his sister Sloane. Learn more about Trent Hindman at http://www.trenthindman.com
Founded in 1989 by racer Cliff Dempsey, Corby, U.K. based Cliff Dempsey Racing has been fielding cars in the British Formula Ford Championship under its own name and as the hosting team for Team USA Scholarship. In 2012, CDR expands to field a team in the Protyre Formula Renault BARC Championship. Learn more about Cliff Dempsey Racing at http://www.cliffdempseyracing.com
Regarded as the premier and most cost-effective junior single-seater series in the U.K., the Protyre Formula Renault BARC Championship provides the perfect entry-level category for all aspiring young drivers.
Manufacturer supported, it bridges the gap between karting and series such as Formula Renault UK giving drivers the chance to gain vital race experience on the UK’s leading circuits and in a top carbon fiber machine which is still raced all over Europe.
It also remains one of the foremost feeder series to Formula Renault UK and has helped many drivers go on to greater stardom, such as 2007 runner-up Dean Stoneman who in three years has already tested a Formula One car.
Keen to further strengthen its appeal, organizers have a number of exciting new features planned for 2011 including a link with the Lotus Renault GP Team and the introduction of a BTCC appearance – exposing teams and drivers to the capacity crowds and high profile of the TOCA package.
