| Skip Barber: Garcia Scores Two Wins at Watkins Glen |
The Skip Barber Racing School presents the Mazda Summer Series for Skip Barber Formula recently held Rounds Three and Four at the famous Watkins Glen International Raceway.
Group 2 race one witnessed Ryan Garcia takings the early lead after the green flag waved, followed by Brian Cook and Greg Strelzoff. Strelzoff made a pop for second place on Cook and made it stick. But Cook didn't give up so easily. He retook the position a few laps later. Garcia meanwhile extended his lead dramatically, building a huge advantage over the field. Strelzoff subsequently took second back from Cook on the way to turn nine, while Bill Shields and Greg Holloway battled for fourth. When the checkered flag came out, Garcia scored the win, followed by Strelzoff and David Levine.
Race two for the group had Garcia taking the lead at the start, while Holloway made a pass for fourth. Strelzoff and Levine held second and third respectively. Holloway, however, spun which bringing out the full course yellow on lap five. The green flag flew on lap seven, with Garcia remaining in the lead, followed by Strelzoff. Levine and Cook battled hard for third. Garcia completed the sweep, scoring the win over Strelzoff and Levine at the checkered flag.
The initial start for Group 4 race one was waved off for a bad grouping at the line. After one additional lap, the green flag flew with Strelzoff taking the early lead. Holloway almost immediately took second from Doug Tuttle. Strelzoff quickly extended his lead on the following pack of Holloway and Tuttle. Tuttle eventually lost the third position to Bobby Eberle on lap eight. When the checkered flag came out, Strelzoff was the winner, followed by Holloway and Eberle.
When the green flag came out for race two, Gary Vizioli took the early lead. Unfortunately, Eberle brought out a full course caution when his car hit the wall at the bus stop. Vizioli held onto the lead, followed by Gus Doppes, until lap five, when a black flag all was brought out due to an incident involving the two at the bus stop. Both drivers were ok, and the racing resumed on lap six. Cook slid into first, becoming the new leader, ahead of Strelzoff and Holloway. The three racers battled it out, putting on a great show. At the checkered flag, Cook brought home his first win, followed by Strelzoff and Holloway.
The Skip Barber Presents the Mazda Summer Series for Formula Skip Barber season continues on June 15-17, with a trip to Canada at the Le Circuit Mont Tremblant in Quebec. |
