BUTTONWILLOW, CALIF. (May 22, 2012) - In a field of 16 cars this past weekend, DFR drivers Bobby Kelley and Camden Geise both reached the podium and the teams other two drivers, Peter West and Chris Hundley, both had strong showings.
Pacific F2000 points leader Bobby Kelley had a fine weekend with two poles, one fast lap, one win and a second place. The 19 year-old had a great race both days with PR1 Motorsports driver David Cheng, with Kelley winning Saturday’s event and Cheng getting the victory Sunday.
“I think we just used up our rears a bit too much on Saturday and ran out of tire for Sunday,” said Kelley. “I tried to save them in race one, but with Cheng putting on the pressure I had no choice but to run hard.”
The 16 year-old Geise rebounded from a crash on Friday morning that saw the Mission Viejo, Ca. driver with Trench Shoring backing lose out on almost the whole days running, to finish third Sunday and fourth Saturday.
“I made a mistake Friday but I can’t thank the team enough for working hard to get things put back together right. Bobby put some points between us this weekend, but I managed to increase my lead over third in the overall, so I am pretty happy.”
Hundley made his return to the series with backing from Limousine Connection to finish eighth in race one, and a strong sixth in race two.
“It felt great to be back in the series, I had almost forgotten how much fun this stuff is.”
The former Star Mazda and USF2000 driver is looking forward getting back in the seat as soon as possible, with his sights set on returning for rounds eight and nine.
Peter West, driver of the No. 99 Van Diemen with Samson Communications sponsorship had a great weekend going until an engine miss caused him to drop out during the Sunday event.
“Saturday was the most fun I’ve had in a race car in a long time. The car was a bit tight during the first race, but it was hooked up Sunday. I was really looking forward to finishing well in race two, but a crank sensor put us out early. It’s ok, Autoclub Speedway is next up and I always run well there.”
As West mentioned, the series heads to Autoclub Speedway in Fontana, Calif., on June 9-10, and the entire DFR team hopes to finish the second half of the season as strong as it has run the first half.
