Jack Le Brocq returned to his winning ways at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit on Sunday (May 20), taking out the third round of the Australian Formula Ford Championship, regaining the title lead.
After scoring his maiden national level pole position by a convincing margin, Le Brocq won both the second and third races, and heads to Townsville with a four point advantage in the points standings.
The Sunday morning heat was held in wet conditions, which saw a succession of race leaders slip off the edge of the circuit.
Le Brocq managed to bounce back from his own moment to cement the win from Shae Davies, and Scott Andrews, who scored his first ever National level podium finish in only his second round start.
The finale was held under bright skies, with Le Brocq able to clear out from the squabbling pack.
Mathew Hart backed up his opening race win with a second place in the third heat, which gave him second for the round. Previous Championship leader Garry Jacobson meanwhile finished third in the last race to be third overall for the weekend.
For Le Brocq, the Phillip Island round was a return to form after a trying round at Symmons Plains.
"It's really good to get up for the win this weekend in the various weather conditions," Le Brocq said. "Fortunately in the third race the rear tyres didn't go away like in the first, and I was able to get a gap on the field. We had a shocker at Symmons Plains, but we're looking pretty good again. To come away from the weekend with the championship lead, I couldn't possibly be happier."
Shae Davies finished fourth for the weekend ahead of an impressive Macauley Jones, with the pair engaged in battle at the end of race three.
Scott Andrews was sixth overall, while Simon Hodge returned to action with a brand new chassis following a horror weekend in Tasmania to score his best result to date in seventh.
"We struggled early on with the new car in practice and qualifying with some mixed results," Hodge said. "I closed the gap in race one, and the damp conditions in race two seemed to suit my driving style. Finally in the third race we were able to get on top of some of the issues and lock down sixth position. To have that sort of weekend with a brand new car, I'm stoked."
The weekend point score was rounded out by debutant Anton De Pasquale, Rhett Noonan, Sam Power and David Sera, who suffered a post race-three penalty after contact with Power.
The Australian Formula Ford Championship now heads north to Townsville for the fourth round of the season on July 6-8.
