BOWMANVILLE, ONT. (October 18, 2011) - Ontario Formula Ford Championship rookie Michael Adams headed into the season-finale at Mosport this month looking to sweep his way to a championship in just his first full season of racing.

Sitting second in points through 12 rounds, the teenager from Courtice, Ont., essentially needed to take both legs of a season-ending doubleheader in order to jump to the top of the tally chart. Bitter cold and rain showers complicated the days, but the driver and his Flagship Racing outfit proved to be more than up to the task.

“Saturday went perfectly,” Adams said afterward. “I qualified on B-pole with Steve Bamford starting right behind me and Steve Bodrug alongside him. The start was interesting, as I could see both trying to find a way by me in the first few corners, but after that I just put down consistent laps and sat behind Sergio Pasian in an ‘A’ car all the way to the checker.”

That class win, the eighth of his rookie season, moved him into the championship lead by a slim four points, and created a head-to-head showdown on Sunday where either he or Bamford would take the B-class championship for 2011 - a thought that weighed on the mind of the rookie.

“The championship started to creep into my head as I was sitting on the mock grid waiting to go out on Sunday for the race,” Adams said of the pressure-packed situation. “Up until then I was just focused on winning the race, not how winning the race would affect the championship. Of course, I knew what was at stake for the final event, so my goal was to stay out of trouble and just bring the car home, no mistakes. Then things went exactly as planned! I ran consistent laps and I knew Steve was behind me - and that’s all I cared about in the final run. I think if it was a 15-lap race, I probably did seven at 1:29.7 and seven at 1:30.2, leaving a lap for the opener.”

While consistency helped bring a championship on Sunday, a lack of it through the middle of the season is what left Adams in a do-or-die situation at the season-finale in the first place. After winning five of his first six starts, the next six brought just two wins alongside a slew of mechanical retirements: broken drive shaft, sheered axle, broken shift lever, and a semi-flood that guided the No. 59 into the turn eight tire wall! A commanding point lead disappeared in rounds seven through 11, before Adams added Champion to his racing resume with a hat trick of wins to close the schedule.

“It was a fantastic first season, a great way to start my FF career,” he said looking backward. “And funny enough, I really have to thank Steve Bamford for helping me to the championship this year! After a crash at race one, he loaned me a car for race two and the points I earned that day were crucial. It was really awesome of him to help us out that first race weekend, and that’s the way I’ve found the whole atmosphere in the paddock, a whole lot of supportive people. Personally I would like to thank my parents first of all, but also Steve, David Clubine, Mike Gayowski and Chris Whibley, all the guys involved with Team Canada FF, and all the marshals and Officials at the track during the year. The OFFC was a great place to be and I had a great first season.”
